Noida (Uttar Pradesh), Dec 28: An 18-year-old woman died earlier this week in Noida after allegedly consuming abortion pills provided by her cousin, police said on Saturday.

A case has been registered under Section 90(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to death caused by an act intended to cause miscarriage. The accused, a 25-year-old man, has been arrested, a senior police officer said.

According to the complaint lodged by the victim’s father, the accused, his nephew, was in a physical relationship with the woman. When she became pregnant, the accused allegedly gave her abortion medication without medical supervision.

Police said the woman’s health condition deteriorated following the intake of the pills. She was admitted to the district hospital in Noida on December 18 and was later referred to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi as her condition worsened. She died during treatment on December 23.

Preliminary investigation and medical records indicate that the woman had been suffering from anaemia for a prolonged period, which may have contributed to her death, police said. Further medical examination reports are awaited.

Officials added that the accused had been residing away from his hometown for several months and returned recently. Police are also examining claims of a financial dispute between the complainant and the accused’s father, though they said the criminal investigation remains focused on the circumstances leading to the woman’s death.

Further investigation is underway, police said.
